When we entered their cave he stood out from the rest. Not the strongest nor loudest, but the one among his peers who I could possibly share a basic conversation with.
While his tribe valued brawn over brain, he assessed and positioned himself to be protected by his peers.
Rhagerhaletak allowed him, or perhaps deliberately placed him as valuable asset to be protected by us. The dragon trusted his cognitive capacity enough to serve as a guide to our expedition.
